2MASS: (topic last updated February 26, 2001)
The Two Micron
All Sky Survey (2MASS) project used a northern-hemisphere and a southern-hemisphere infrared telescope to survey the sky in tandem. The project was a collaboration between The University of Massachusetts and the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC) (JPL / Caltech ). Funding is provided primarily by NASA and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The observatories and the survey were constructed and operated by the University of Massachusetts. The data processing and data product generation is carried out by IPAC. The survey operations began in Spring 1997 and completed February 15, 2001. Processing of survey data is expected to continue for years.
